Science Comics Wild Weather Storms Meteorology and Climate MK Reed Jonathan Hill 9781626727892 Books Reviews

  • The local news team is preparing viewers for a coming snow storm. When meteorologist Stormin’ Norman gets fed up with the vapid host and his “joke” about cold weather disproving global warming, he lets loose a ton of knowledge about how weather works.

It’s the character interplay — and their simplified, expressive designs — that make this so readable. Seeing Norman spin Chase McCloud around in his chair to illustrate how the Earth’s orbit creates seasons is a hoot! We also learn

    * why the study of weather is called meteorology
    * how landscape and atmosphere affect temperature
    * warm and cold fronts
    * the formation and effects of tornadoes and hurricanes
    * whether Chase should be afraid of “shark-filled cyclones” (I guess sharknado was trademarked)
    * different types of precipitation and how they form
    * the effects of climate change, particularly flooding
    * how to make rainbows

The visuals are clever and imaginative, with air masses of different temperature represented by wrestlers and a walk underwater, among many other scenes. It’s a pleasure to see what’s coming over the next page.

This volume is a bit lighter on some of the deeper scientific concepts than some of the other titles in the series, which some readers may appreciate. There isn’t a lot of complicated terminology. This is more of a survey, touching briefly on a large number of topics, and surprisingly, it doesn’t deal much with how weather forecasting works. I would have liked to have seen much more about lightning and thunder, but the humor in the character interactions still made this worth reading.

The book also has a short glossary, a couple of pages on weather tools, a few pages on how to prepare for an emergency, and a fascinating text section on debunking weather myths. (The publisher provided a review copy. Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)
  • Join the crew at Action News - Chase McCloud, Connie Trales, Randi Billows, and Stormin' Norman Weatherby as they find out all about weather and climate. When Snowpocalypse 20XX hits, the entire TV station is excited about the forecast, although Chase thinks that snow days prove there is no such thing as global warming. That gets Stormin' Norman a bit hot under t he collar and he decides to educate Chase and their viewing audience about how weather on Earth actually works. Lucky for us - because we get to share in the knowledge.

With colorful and entertaining illustrations, "Normans_Middle_School_Presentation" explains basics like the water cycle, various cloud formations, and how the Fujita scale measures the speed of tornadoes. But this meteorologist goes beyond those basics to spell out how air pressure, jet streams, pressure fronts, and yes...he does explain the idea of climate change to Chase. (Chase is also very worried about the possibility of a sharknado.)

Clear explanations combined with the illustrations make the information very easy to understand. Back matter includes a glossary, an explanation of weather tools, and a section that debunks quite a few wild weather myths. This series has the double advantage of appealing to those who already have an interest in the subject while also drawing in those who enjoy graphic novels of all sorts.

I read an e-book provided by the publisher for review purposes.

"As others have pointed out, this book is way too big for the average tourist. It also, strangely, lacks many pictures. If you're going for under a few weeks and want to hit lots of the big sites, go with the Lonely Planet Discover Thailand (Travel Guide) instead. It'll save your back not to have to lug around the bigger book. You can then look online for more off-the-beaten-path ideas. If you're thinking of moving to Thailand, this seems a great resource."

Lonely Planet Thailand Travel Guide Lonely Planet Anita Isalska Tim Bewer Celeste Brash Austin Bush David Eimer Damian Harper Andy Symington 9781786570581 Books Reviews

  • I 'm usually a big fan of lonely planet's travel guides but this one was more a source of annoyance than of help. I have to say that I bought the version, which probably made things worse.
We spent most of the time in Northern Thailand and the coverage for that area was extremely spotty. Yes, the guide covers the tourist magnets but when you venture just a little bit outside (and not far) there is very little information. Chiang Mai is covered well, but the way this chapter is structured makes it a major pain on a . All information is listed by geographical sections of Chiang Mai, and it was really difficult to navigate the information on the because you always only see one page. I had to endlessly scroll back and forth to see in which section I am.
Another issue was that the cities, towns and points of interest were often spelled differently in the guide than they are spelled on the official street signs or popular maps (sometimes Lonely Planet uses a completely different name, that maybe is theoretically correct but is completely useless in practice when nobody else uses that name). Therefore often it was almost impossible to even find something in the guide with the search function because obviously doesn't find anything that is spelled different even by one character.
Therefore - this is a clear "not recommend" for me. Worst Lonely Planet guide by far in the big collection of mine.
  • Extremely detailed and a must have guide. I planned my entire trip to Thailand based on this book. Hidden secrets, amazing foodie spots and getaways!

I had a trip planned, when I received this book, it all changed, a ton of locations that are not talked about and are just as good!

The size of the book fits into my hand (I have big hands) If the weight of the book, or the size of the book is the problem, maybe you should cut your trip down to a few days only. As a backpacker, this is a MUST HAVE.

    5/5 GREAT!
  • As others have pointed out, this book is way too big for the average tourist. If you're thinking of moving to Thailand, this seems a great resource.
  • I spent 5 weeks in Thailand in 2010 and my lonely planet guide made the difference between a good trip and a great trip! I felt like I had an insiders view into local culture. I'm planning my return trip, and it has been really cool to see the updates for places I traveled to nearly nine years ago (they also seem to be consistent with website updates for some of my most memorable adventures). This book is great for both the budget and no-expense-spared traveler as it will let you in on the local secrets!
  • This was a NECESSITY on my trip to Thailand. I read the entire thing over on my plane ride there and felt SUPER informed, 10x more informed than I already was from searching through thousands of search engines before my trip. There are so many recommendations of places to go and things to see. Also, many off the beaten path places to visit. I would totally recommend getting this if you are planing to visit Thailand. It will definitely come in handy, especially when you don't have cell service and need a good old fashioned book / pull out map to help you out.
  • Who wants to carry a guidebook that weighs as much as a phone book on their month-long trip to Thailand? Not me. Sent it back when I saw the guide's size (and weight).
  • This book is so helpful, especially when traveling to remote areas, like Thailand, where you may not have wifi or cell service. It has all the highlights you need. I just wish it had more color imagery to get you more excited about some of the places.
  • Definitely a big book, but with lots of information and maps included. Even with the internet I love traveling with a guide book!

He’s rich, gorgeous, and charming as cake but she can’t stand him. Stranded on an island is going to be torture… or is it?

Liz Meyer works on a yacht whose owner is never there – which is why she took the position. The man’s public relations persona is womanizing and… charming. She’s been around his charm and his magnetism is hypnotic. The sparks between them could start a fire! Liz doesn’t want charming or fire. She wants peace after the constant turmoil with her ex.

The last place the billionaire would be is the first place Liz wants to spend her time.

Lincoln Holstein is nothing like the media makes him out to be. He prefers the quiet of his penthouse over the mad rush of a party. When he’s forced to retire to his yacht for some well-deserved time away and to escape threats from a stalking competitor, he’s frustrated by the sassy steward he hadn’t realized was on his payroll. She does nothing but argue with him, as if she’s the boss with the billions. He’s never been more aware of a woman and he’s not sure he likes the control she continues to take.

But none of that matters when the yacht suddenly starts to sink. With only two lifeboats available, Lincoln and Liz both decide not to take a spot in favor of saving others. They aren’t far from a deserted island, so they swim for it.

Can two enemies rely on each other to survive? What if Liz and Lincoln find out losing their hearts is the best way to save themselves?

Escape to Getaway Bay and get stranded on a deserted island for some seriously sweet romance.

Each book can be read as a standalone, with a happily-ever-after ending, and clean, sweet-without-losing-the-heat romance!

  • This is another great addition to this series. I usually don’t add more info to the book description as I don’t believe in spoilers. Liz was recently hired as the steward on Lincoln’s yacht by the purser being told that Lincoln was seldom on it. She was looking for it to be quiet as she had a lot of thinking to do to figure out how she could get enough money to save her moms house and pay off the many debts her father racked up. Liz met Lincoln in the kitchen after he arrived on board followed by a party of over 200 people and they herd a loud crunch then screams. The yacht was taking in water quickly and was tilting to it’s side. This was the beginning of the Liz and Lincoln being stranded on a deserted island and the start of their story. There were many twists and turns to it. There was learning to trust and mistakes that happened when one eavesdrops and doesn’t get the whole story. i thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
  • Liz was one strong and brave lady! I think this is why she was so attractive to him. Lincoln had a good heart, but was broken.
  • Eden and Holden had their chance with love five years ago, but Holden broke off their relationship. Eden does not imagine ever seeing Holden again especially not stranded on a hiking trail together. A quick, sweet read. Holden is great but Eden expects him to open up immediately. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
  • I don't know if it's just because I had such a connection to a previously read book, or if I just am not in the mood for a novel such as this one- but I did not feel the pull to this novel that I normally do when I am reading a new novel. I will definitely have to try again later.
  • Liz's first opinion of Lincoln is negative. She changes her mind. And changes it again. And changes it again.
    Lincoln changes his only twice.
Paulson is the kind of writer whose work you actively search for. In this book she's done it again.
  • She's been hurt before and he's used to women only after his money. Now they are on a stranded island and must trust each other to survive. Needs better editing.
  • This book was really enjoyable. Misunderstandings make big messes! I'd say all was forgiven WAY too easily, but happily worked out.
