Software development methodologies lack the details of how UX fits into organizations, teams, and projects. Some suggest that a Product Manager describing features is enough, UX should train others to do their work, or excluding UX solves them being “too siloed.” This happens with no other role in software development. It’s hurting culture, efficiency, and productivity, and creating poor products for customers.Your customer only sees your UX, not your 1000 developers or if you were Agile or Lean. Companies are figuring out that UX specialists and the User-Centered Design process are high-ROI and irreplaceable. Recent highly-publicized UX failures remind us that skimping on UX can alienate customers, create negative media attention, and burn millions of dollars.Learn how the UX process fits into Agile and Lean; augments DevOps goals; increases customer satisfaction; and saves time, money, and sanity... all before developers write a line of code.--------------------------------------------------Across companies of all sizes, there is a clear pattern People don’t understand UX and they’re not sure how it works into their organizations. You’ve probably had conflicts with UX practitioners. They don’t seem Lean or Agile. In fact, they’re throwing off your Agile train so badly you want to throw them under it! They’re killing ideas, timelines, and budgets. Their work looks easy, why can’t you just do it yourselves? UX seems like a black box disappearing for weeks or months and then just telling us what to build. Where are the communication and collaboration?UX practitioners are keenly aware of these conflicts and how they are seen as the problem. Non-UX roles have many misunderstandings and myths about UX including these issues•Agile methodologies often don’t mention UX at all, as if the people designing what Engineering will build are not important or necessary.•Everybody thinks UX is just wireframes and “anybody can draw boxes on a page,” but it’s far from that. •UX isn’t formalized and doesn’t have defined processes or approaches; it’s whatever the designer “feels like.” False!•Companies select the wrong people for a job that HR and hiring managers don’t understand. They think these roles require artists, but UX is not an art job.•Teams are sure they don’t need UX or can’t afford it, often without knowing what UX work and tools actually cost.•Product managers often want to “do UX work” before or during a project. However, they don’t realize that what they are doing isn’t really UX.•Developers often aren't sure what UX is or believe those are the workers who A/B test things after release. That’s too late for user testing. Wouldn’t engineers like to know before they code that what they’re working on has been validated as being a good product or feature for customers? Yes, they often think that idea sounds great! You’ll learn to dispel these UX myths, misunderstandings, and more in this book. Let's get your DevOps out of the ICU. Learning goals include1) The correct integration of UX saves time, money, increases efficiency, keeps engineering’s changes to a minimum, & creates the best product for users.2) UX specialists conduct research, design the entire product, learn from testing, iterate to fix flaws, & deliver vetted blueprints so engineers build once.3) How User-Centered Design fits into project timelines and development methodologies including Agile and Lean.4) The benefits of bringing UX specialists in early during portfolio planning and management.--------------------------------------------------“If you're a member of an Agile team and you're struggling to understand how best to partner with UX, DevOps ICU is the book for you. Debbie's real-life stories and experiences will light your path. And the book is pretty funny, too.” - Travis Bjorklund, Senior Manager, Product Management and Agile Transformation

It's not easy being Apollo, especially when you've been turned into a human and banished from Olympus. On his path to restoring five ancient oracles and reclaiming his godly powers, Apollo (aka Lester Papadopoulos) has faced both triumphs and tragedies. Now his journey takes him to Camp Jupiter in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the Roman demigods are preparing for a desperate last stand against the evil Triumvirate of Roman emperors. Hazel, Reyna, Frank, Tyson, Ella, and many other old friends will need Apollo's aid to survive the onslaught. Unfortunately, the answer to their salvation lies in the forgotten tomb of a Roman ruler . . . someone even worse than the emperors Apollo has already faced.

The inside account of an iconic team in baseball history the 1969 New York Mets - a consistently last-place team that turned it all around in just one season - told by '69 Mets outfielder Art Shamsky, Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, and other teammates as they reminisce about what happened then and where they are today.

The New York Mets franchise began in 1962, and the team finished in last place nearly every year. When the 1969 season began, fans weren't expecting much from "the Lovable Losers". But as the season progressed, the Mets inched closer to first place and then eventually clinched the National League pennant. They were underdogs against the formidable Baltimore Orioles but beat them in five games to become world champions. No one had predicted it. In fact, fans could hardly believe it happened. Suddenly they were "the Miracle Mets".

Playing right field for the '69 Mets was Art Shamsky, who had stayed in touch with his former teammates over the years. He hoped to get together with star pitcher Tom Seaver (who would win the Cy Young award as the best pitcher in the league in 1969 and go on to become the first Met elected to the Hall of Fame), but Seaver was ailing and could not travel. So, Shamsky organized a visit to Tom Terrific in California, accompanied by the number-two pitcher, Jerry Koosman, outfielder Ron Swoboda, and shortstop Bud Harrelson. Together, they recalled the highlights of that amazing season as they reminisced about what changed the Mets' fortunes in 1969.

With the help of sportswriter Erik Sherman, Shamsky has written After the Miracle for the 1969 Mets. This is an audiobook that every Mets fan - and every baseball fan - must own.

After the Miracle The Lasting Brotherhood of the ཱྀ Mets Audible Audio Edition Art Shamsky Erik Sherman Jonathan Todd Ross Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • This is not just about one of baseball's greatest pennant races. It deals with brotherhood. Shamsky writes of friendships that have endured over half a century, proving that some things are stronger than the sport that brought them together. Back when the players had nicknames that were colorful "The Franchise," "Glider", et al. It was when people could afford to go to a ball game, and baseball was fun to watch. When the great Gil Hodges ran the Miracle Mets. It was the best of times as far as baseball was concerned, and when Shamsky gets together with his teammates, you feel as if you are there with them.
  • I was 11 years old when the Amazin's won the World Series. I lived outside Philly but this team captured my imagination. I was always a National League guy so the Mets fit that bill but this was something different. Had posters adorning my bedroom wall of the team and Koos and Seaver etc. This book brings everything back beautifully. So well written. The idea of how the book is laid out with a review of the season followed by the trip of a few teammates to see The Franchise is perfect. Baseball fans should appreciate it but fans of that team will enjoy and savor that season once again by reading this book.
  • Loved the book. Very well written and a must read for the baseball fan. Art Shamsky. Right fielder, first baseman for the Miracle Mets of 1969 and the co-writer Erik Sherman have created a wonderfully told history of the arrival of the lowly Merts of1962 to the Mets of 1969 rise to the victors of the World Series, against all odds. The reunion of the major players and their reminicrnses in a loving, respectful visit to an ailing Tom Seaver, the great pitcher for the Mets, evokes love, respect and admiration and comradeship for the Boys Of 1969. The celebration of the Mets 50 year ago victory will bring them back together and relive the incredible victory over 100 to one odds. The book should be read not only by a true baseball fan but also by a reader who loves a great story that is well written.
  • This book reviews the '69 season and goes beyond that as a group from the 69 team visits with Tom Seaver at his home and vineyard. Obviously this was a special team hat brought special friendships. Plenty of familiar stories that are nostalgic with some new information included. a great read for any fan who grew up with the Mets and enjoyed that special team.
  • Political tripe mixed in to what I thought was going to be a fun read.
  • As a lifelong Metsvfsn I found the book enjoyable but wanted more on that amazing season. More clubhouse stories, etc. would have greatly benefitted this book.
  • This book brought back so many great feelings of those great days.
To read the thoughts of some of my all-time favorites was awesome.
  • Not I !I a great book for Met fans, but also a story about life. How some bonds between friends create lifelong bonds. A book about the great times of youth, and the effects of aging.

Discrimination and Disparities Thomas Sowell Books Reviews

  • This author knows his topics and is able to share them in a way which keeps you engaged. It's really interesting how often the actions taken to combat perceived discrimination end up being core cause of the same. This is the type of material which needs to be taught in our colleges and universities. Just the facts and the truth supported with scientific research. In the first Chapter Disparities and Prerequisites he lays bare the role I.Q. has on one's real success.

Children of parents with professional occupations were found to hear about 2,100 words per hour at home. Children in Working Class houses heard 1,200 words per hour where children from homes which are on welfare were found to hear 600 words per hour. What about the advantages of being the first born in a family? Or are they really disadvantages? Hard work and perseverance are so important to really achieving success. But so is the personal desire to succeed.

His examples of those companies who have gotten so much right and dominated their industry for decades are lessons which must be paid attention to closely. He lists examples of house hold name type companies known globally that learned first hand the massive price they would pay for not evolving and staying abreast of technology changes. Even more startling is how these same companies once controlled the industries but failed to change with the times and now are nearly relegated to being footnotes in history.

Another great book by Thomas Sowell.......
  • Thomas Sowell is the man to read if you want a realistic, objective perspective. No goofy, over emotional, politics-of-envy-and-jealousy progressive narrative here.
  • Gives a logical view of the decisions being made around us. Example after example points out the numerous effects of what many might think are "good and bad" political or social decisions, and why something thought to be as common as "equal outcomes" isn't as common as we think. Overall I found this to be an enlightening and wonderful audio book, but this is not something you just listen to in the background while you sleep or complete complicated task, paying attention is paramount to understanding the points made throughout the book. Definitely listen during daily commutes or long rides in the car.
  • Thomas Sowell is a true gem of the American experience. A black man who grew up in NY during the 30's. A black man who got into Harvard BEFORE the Civil Rights Act. Sowell speaks in the common tongue for the common man, but delivers timeless wisdom and much needed common sense. Within the "short" book, you will find enough hard information which will enable you to never loose a debate again when it comes to the topics covered. Like most of Sowells books. A voice that will carry on for generations. Glad to live in the time of Sowell.
  • Sowell always does a good job showing that vision doesn’t equal outcome. Just because people want something to be true doesn’t make it so. He points out how people misuse statistics and , unfortunately, how people maintain incorrect positions in the face of conflicting evidence. Sadly, we have swapped opinions for analysis. Keep writing Tom, we need you.
  • Throughout his long and distinguished career Thomas Sowell has been a consistent stickler for truth. In this book he takes empirical aim at the truth about outcomes. In short, social scholars and economists inevitably over-simplify cause and effect and fail to accept that “grossly unequal distributions of outcomes are common, both in nature and among people, in circumstances where neither genes nor discrimination are involved.”

The book is short, to the point, and very clearly written. You don’t need a degree in sociology or economics to follow. The arguments are steeped in common sense, which is where we often lose sight of the truth in our admirable but misguided desire to do the “right” thing.

The problem is actually much bigger than the areas of social justice addressed in the book. It is a problem that is quickly eroding the value of all of our political, social, educational, and economic discourse.

Type “This is what science says about …” into Google and you’ll get close to 1.5 billion hits. News outlets and social commentators use the heading daily. In reality, however, “science”, which is an empirical methodology, not a body of knowledge, probably says nothing about the topic, and whatever apparent “facts” the author includes probably say even less in the larger context of truth and meaning.

Technology, of course, is making the problem worse. Technology gives a voice to every would-be opinion-maker, reinforcing the false perception, in all of its 1’s and 0’s, that math and statistics are inevitably and inherently “true.” It’s a ruse. To the extent it is true it is typically so only in the one dimension in which the writer of the article used it to advance his or her point. That’s not the multi-dimensional and dynamic world, however, where most important reality, like opportunity, compassion, and fairness actually lives.

My only complaint is that the electronic book is over-priced for what it is. The author doesn’t typically set the price and Mr. Sowell is a premium intellect that deserves a premium price tag on his thoughts. It is, nonetheless, an empirically supported conclusion, so I’m hopeful Mr. Sowell will forgive me that.
