The German Midwife Mandy Robotham Books Reviews

  • This is actually one of the best books that I’ve ever read. Heartbreaking and shocking at times and in turn touching and heartfelt. I couldn’t put it down. I hated to read the last page. To find a new book to read now may prove difficult. I cant say enough that you should read this book. It will stay with you for a long time. Amazing.
  • Mixing fact and fiction into one of the best historical novels,I have ever read,Mandy creates a believable scenario where Hitler's mistress gives birth to his child. The German Midwife was a prisoner of war, residing in a concentration camp when she was handpicked to help with the pregnancy and delivery of Eva Braun's baby. Mandy does a wonderful job making Eva a "likeable" character when the world only knows her as another evil sidekick of Hitler.. we see her as a soon to be mom doing her best for the child. The outcome at birth, was not what I expected, and grabbed me by surprise. All in all, characters and plot are totally believable and I am sad this book has come to conclusion. Hope to read more by this writer...
  • This book captures love, trust, suffering and pain. It tells of childbirth in awful conditions, both by the poor and the rich, with such accuracy that you can actually feel the contractions and the indescribable love a mother feels for a newborn. With fear and loathing toward the unjustly actions taken against the innocents and collateral damage humans that come during times of war, I strongly encourage you to open your mind and heart and read this book.
  • In a room somewhere in Germany a child is born with the midwife helping. It might be in a hospital, a ghetto, a concentration camp or a castle. The only concern of the midwife is the health of the mother and the child. Thus life happens or not depending on the circumstances, in wartime or not. Very interesting book.
  • I completed this book in about a week’s time which is slightly longer than my norm. It took but a few chapters to really grasp my attention but midway through drug on a bit. Nearing the end, it picked up again and the end (epilogue) really tied it altogether.
  • This book is both beautiful and horrifying at the same time. I picked it to read because my amazing little sister is a midwife. I will recommend it to her because the beauty overwhelms the horror. I loved it, and found it very difficult to put down. I will admit I shed some tears now and again.
  • An actual good story. No formula-matic, same ole same ole this book. Fresh, totally new concept within an enjoyable read.
    Dear Author Well done you!
  • A very interesting read, of what might have been. Could not put this book down! Looking forward to reading more from this author!

"There is a lesson, actually a Spanish conversation and an accompanying vocabulary list, which covers eating healthy where I picked up a lot of Spanish vocabulary for how to say things such as veganism, cage-free eggs, hormone-free, organic food, etc. I love this lesson because I want to eat healthy not only at home but also when I am vacationing in a Spanish speaking country. By the way, there is also a downloadable PDF which I can access on my laptop if I log-in to audible and go to my "library" page. The PDF really helps me remember all of this 21st century Spanish I am learning."

  • The greatest benefit of using these audiobooks is that you are learning Spanish for the 21st century. I don't think there's is anything else quite like it in the learning Spanish market. If you are into combat sports, like one of my students who I tutor in Spanish, there's even a Spanish conversation about training at the MMA or UFC gym. And if you are into technology and the Web, when you finish with this 2-in-1 box set you will have learned a truckload of Spanish vocabulary words and phrases for technology and the Web by the time you've completed these two audiobook. And did I mention this audiobook even offers Spanish for students who are vegans or vegetarians?
  • It was a brilliant idea to create a program that teaches modern Spanish. If you think about it, everyday we use words that we didn't used 15 years ago. This really happens with social media and technology. It's very useful having a Spanish audio program that takes this into account. There's also a downloadable PDF in my audible library that's a transcript of both audiobooks.

Love Money and Parenting How Economics Explains the Way We Raise Our Kids Audible Audio Edition Matthias Doepke Fabrizio Zilibotti Eric Michael Summerer a division of Recorded Books HighBridge Books Reviews

  • This is a fascinating book that I greatly enjoyed reading. It makes a clear and compelling argument and connects it to personal experience as well as data and academic research. The goal of the book is to explain how the choices made by parents depend on their environment. The authors show for example that when inequality is low, then parents are more likely to give their children more freedom, and they impose more constraints and incentives on them when inequality is higher. The book presents a large amount of evidence supporting this argument by looking at changes over time and across countries. The parenting styles described in the book are based on the developmental psychology literature and the authors also discuss the evidence from that literature.

I like how the authors emphasize that we should not assume that parenting styles in earlier decades or in other countries are wrong simply because they differ from what we find optimal. Clearly, parenting differs across time and countries (the authors provide many examples), but that’s also because the environment in which parents make their choices differ. I find this very plausible and witnessed it myself growing up in two different countries and with different families. It’s fascinating to read the many great examples in the book for how the environment affects parenting and how economics helps explain it. I think the book is relevant for virtually everyone, because it helps us understand the choices of our parents, and the own choices as parents. The book is well-written and full of examples, I highly recommend it.
  • Unbelievable omission the book is a comprehensive comparison of parenting styles across several countries. It uses parenting styles observed and "developed" by Urie Bronfenbrenner from a 1970s comparison of parenting styles in the US and the USSR. No mention of Bronfenbrenner's name in the index. As far as I can tell, no mention of it is the footnotes. There is no bibliography so it is difficult to tell whether the authors are even aware of this scholar's work. How can they not be? Frustrating and unprofessional.
  • Personally, I find the book quite interesting and make me keep on thinking about my daily practices as a new mom of my little boy. Reading the book is a great experience in knowing what are the possible explanations for different parenting styles over time and across countries. Literally, I have no background in economics. But the book is still quite friendly for readers like me and quite convincing. I like the idea of using economic constraints to understand parenting choices. Reading the book reminds myself of some of the exercises done by my parents and also makes me seriously re-evaluate some of my daily actions with my son. This is really an interesting experience.

Anyway, I highly recommend the books to all of you guys in case you would like to understand the relationship between parents and kids deeper.
  • This book is helping me to understand things I’ve observed anecdotally living in various countries, as a curious and loving parent, wondering about all the same things as Zillbotti and Doepke. They help explain the increase in parenting intensity from our own childhoods to those of our children. The change has been a dramatic one in terms of investment. They are able to formalize, in a very readable way with anecdotes aplenty, many of what I pondered and discussed over the years with other parents from umpteen cultures, schools and academics. Bravo - look forward to finishing this book and may post some more again!
  • The book "Love, Money, and Parenting" by Matthias Doepke and Fabrizio Zilibotti provides economic explanations about the changing of parenting styles over time as well as its cross-country differences. The primary goal is to unveil how socio-economic conditions, for example, income inequality, cultivates the parents-children relationship.

Also, as a mainland Chinese who has lived in Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland and now moved back to Hong Kong, reading the book reminds me of quite a lot of different daily scenarios of parenting that I met in my life. The reasoning of linking them with economic constraints together with income inequality and the scientific shreds of evidence the authors provided make the story convincing for me.

Also, even though the book, as indicated by the authors, is not another "user guide" of child-rearing, as a new dad, I personally find the book quite useful in terms of a better understanding own parenting choices that looks like instinct at first glance, but turns out to have deeply rooted economic reasoning. As a matter of fact, before reading the book, both my wife and I have taken online tests. The test told that the baby's dad tends to be the permissive type while the mom is the authoritarian type. How should we coordinate with each other to offer a better living environment for our little boy? Any answer to such a question pre-requisites the understanding of what are the forces that shape the child-rearing decisions. And the book provides us with economic reasoning, which turns out to be helpful. Therefore, I do recommend the book to all, especially those young parents.
  • This is a very compelling and comprehensive book on parenting style and its determinants in the past, present and future. The book takes the reader on a fascinating journey starting from the authors’ own parenting experience (great anecdotes!) and ending with an outlook how trends in inequality and institutions will shape the parenting of the next generation. The book’s argument is carefully connected to the latest academic literature and vast empirical evidence. At the same time it is very entertaining to read and provides a lot of food for thought.

I read the book while commuting to work and enjoyed every bit of it. Highly recommended to all readers interested in family economics, education, and inequality and to all present and future parents!

The Saint Paddy Promise A Cozy Mystery A Tess and Tilly Cozy Mystery Book 6 edition by Kathi Daley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

  • The Saint Paddy’s Promise is the sixth in Kathi Daley’s Tess and Tilly Cozy Mystery series. The smooth writing style flows at a steady pace, the characters are well rounded and affable, and the storyline well plotted and interesting. As with all her books, Ms. Daley has provided readers with a clean, fun read, with caring and compassionate characters, an intriguing mystery to try to solve, and adorable dogs and cats. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries.

Tess Thomas works for the United States Postal Service and enjoys delivering the mail and visiting with the town’s residents and business owners on her route in the small community of White Eagle, Montana. In addition to being a mail carrier, Tess is an animal shelter volunteer and works closely with Brady Baker, the local veterinarian and shelter owner, to train and place animals with people who are a perfect match for them. Tess's brother, Mike, is a member of the White Eagle Police Department and is engaged to her best friend, Bree Price, the owner of the local bookstore, Book Boutique. Her mom and aunt co-own Sisters’ Diner. Her boyfriend, Tony Marconi, who is extremely skilled at locating information and has contacts around the world, is trying to help Tess solve the mystery surrounding her father who reportedly died in an accident when she was a teenager, but who they believe may still be alive.

Bree swore she wouldn’t turn into a Bridezilla, but as her June wedding day approaches and things aren’t going as she hoped, she’s driving Tess a little crazy. Tess is determined to be the best maid of honor and offers workable alternatives each time a problem arises. After working with Brady and the shelter dogs, Tess and her dog, Tilly, meet Jennifer Anne Claremont and her grandmother who are sitting on a park bench. After introducing themselves and chatting for a few minutes, Jennifer explained that her grandmother has made the trip to White Eagle on March 17 for the past sixty years. Intrigued, Tess asks why and Jennifer shares her grandmother’s love story Elizabeth Bradford met Patrick O’Malley, and they fell in love but knew their families wouldn’t approve of their relationship. Patrick went back east to take care of some business and personal matters, promising to return on St. Patrick’s Day, and they agreed to meet at the bench in the park, but he never returned. When Jennifer is done, Tess is so moved that she volunteered Tony to try to find Patrick or at least figure out why he never returned. Tony, who has a facial recognition program that alerts him of possible sightings of Tess’s father, receives an image of a man he believes to be her dad at a truck stop in Billings, Montana. The news is exciting because this is the second time a real-time hit has been received and the first time it’s been in the US, but when two men claiming to be CIA agents arrive at Tony’s home looking for her dad, they become concerned. Tess not only struggles to try to decide if she should share the sighting with Mike but also if they should continue their search and possibly confront him or let it go. When Brick Brannigan, a local bar owner, is found murdered in his bar, Tess knows Mike wants her to stay away from the investigation, but Brick was a friend, and she just can’t stand back and do nothing even though she tells Tony she’d mind her own business this time.
  • Congratulations on the release of your 100th book! Exciting accomplishment…

Mystery and murder seems to have been delivered with first class postage! The mystery of true love has torn at Tess’s heart. Sixty years ago two people met, fell in love, promised to marry, and agreed to meet up on on St. Patrick’s Day to run away and start a new life together. However, the young man never returned, and for the last sixty years, now Nana, has made her annual St. Paddy pilgrimage hoping against hope he’d finally return. The murder has shocked residents of White Eagle. Brick Brannigan, owner the local bar, has been found…victim of a violent crime. Rumors fly about criminal activity and bad employees, but the curious clues of packages, letters, and and his interest in DNA results stump both the authorities and amateur sleuths.

Tess and Tilly Mystery, a favorite Kathi Daley series, and this sixth book is very engaging and hard to put down with more than one mystery, entertaining characters, close relationships, and several “fur” friends. Kathi’s writing style uses a first-person narrative from Tess’s perspective sharing her inner thought, laying out the clues, suggesting scenarios, and devising strategies to uncover the mystery. The realistic banter illustrates well the tone, emotion, and character personalities. And since no one investigates 24/7, Kathi always shares the lives and community connections with additional side stories Tess and Tony grow in their relationship, dog training and adoptions continue, and BFF Bree and brother Mike find out it's not easy to have the wedding of everyone’s dreams. Although newbies can easily join the series here, it has been compelling to follow the evolution of relationships and especially the mystery surrounding Tess’s father as they slowly unfolding throughout the books. However, I always want more about the mysteries and murder that Kathi creates. She often summarizes important phone calls or conversations or computer searches after the fact instead of real time, and when a mystery started in the past, she does not employ flashbacks that I'd find engaging. But it's realism she captures! I still am totally entertained.
  • Old love, new love, different sorts of love and relationships, all play a role in this, Kathi Daley's 100th novel. It would not be a Kathi Daley story without great characters and interesting relationships, including some adorable animals.
From all the stress involved with wedding planning, to an arranged rendezvous sixty years in the past that did not materialize, yet annually hope remains, to mysterious family ties, this book will keep you guessing. How will it tie together? Who else has secrets and answers?
Of course it is not a cozy mystery without murder and intrigue. Life and death play their roles and make us all worry.
You will not be disappointed. Even when some answers that have kept us curious since the first book are revealed, we are not finished with the secrets and consequences.
